Getting my home-making on

Dear readers, I must tell you, last weekend I home-maked like a BOSS.

I made JAM!!!!

Made from peaches.

That were food-processored.

Then packed up to give to friends.

It was my first time making jam, I was inspired by this recipe but followed the instructions on the sure-jell pectin (which I'd recommend, they are easy to understand and it turned out great!). Other than the fact that we got sugary peach slurry all over the countertop when trying to pour it into the jam jars.

I started to hand-write the labels on post-its-notes, but then I thought "if I'm effing MAKING JAM FROM SCRATCH I can get out the typewriter like a respectable crafty person."

Also I made bread! From scratch!

We don't have a cooling rack, so I use a metal trivet. Resourceful, I am. And, judging by the smiles from my friends, they thought the bread and jam turned out pretty good.

  2. Awesome! I don't think I've ever had peach jam... if it's anything like Peaches Foster then I'm sure I'll like it. Nice home-making!

  7. First the homemade jam, then the homemade bread...all made my mouth water! I'm sure it was heavenly. I used a locally available pectin product to make lemon marmelade, once. It was amazingly easy, mostly because it was the "eat this all up right away" technique...everything was cooked and cleaned thoroughly, but it doesn't involve sterilizing the jars, or putting the filled jars through a water bath. Didn't seem to be difficult to finish it all up within a day, or two, though.... Thanks for a fun post!

  29. OH, SO COOL!!! I want to do that stuff so badly! Only I really want to make blackberry jam, since we have blackberries growing everywhere right now...

I'm so impressed by your craftiness. Got any other tips for people who wish to make homemade jam and bread? Like what canning equipment is best to buy, where to buy the pectin, and what type of flour you used? After all, you said the bread was very yummy, but was it wheat, white, or something else? Potato bread? Beer bread?

Lol. Sorry to overwhelm you with questions. But you got me all excited! I love this sort of thing, but am a rank beginner. Everything I know about canning and making homemade bread, I learned from books.

Anyway, thanks for the great post! Have a great day! And enjoy your bread and jam!

  30. Are you familiar with the concept of kneading? your bread looked...um...not gonna say how it looked, im sure it was tasty. Ill just say that youll be amazed and pleased with the results if next time you make bread you try this: after the dough has initially risen, on a lightly floured counter top for two to three minutes fold the dough in half, press, turn a quarter turn, repeat. if your dough is sticky dont be afraid to add a little flour. when it its done the dough should have a smooth stretchy texture. roll into a ball by tucking up under the bottom, then allow it to rise. your finished bread will have a smooth soft crust and a soft even texture.
